Caf¿¿ Society-The East Village Gets a Much-Needed Caf¿¿ Infusion.

MAY 15, 2009

Ost café brings top-shelf espresso to Avenue A.

Ost café at the corner of 13th street and Avenue A in the East Village has become a welcome new addition to the neighborhood's frustratingly small handful of serious coffee-culture establishments. Ost (pronounced like "toast") gets plenty of best-new-entry kudos for its work-friendly space and just-plain-friendly staff, but the spacious, bright, sun-flooded cafe wins the blue ribbon for their coffee and espresso. Like Ninth Street Espresso—the longtime local title-holder for coffee-nerd cred—Ost serves Intelligentsia Direct Trade Coffee, favored by the coffee cognoscenti. The combination of high-quality beans and barista skills assures that the espresso is sublime. In addition, pastries are fresh and tasty, and WiFi is free and plentiful. Floor-to-ceiling corner windows give the café's young, attractive patrons a great view of the bustling Avenue A street scene. One caveat: Go early in the day or prepare to get your red eye to go (or have a seat on the bench outside) as tables fill up quickly and contented customers tend to stay a while.
