Coats for Clunkers: Help While You Shop

DECEMBER 8, 2009

A new twist on an annual coat drive gives holiday shoppers an incentive to keep New York warm.

Nonprofit New York Cares has just kicked off its annual coat drive, but this year’s version has a new twist that gives shoppers an extra incentive to donate their coats. Taking a cue from the auto industry’s “cash for clunkers” program, the organization has partnered with retailers like Weatherproof (they sell coats at places like Zappos and Amazon), who have provided drop-off bins in places like Penn Station. When shoppers drop off a coat, they can pick up a $100 rebate coupon to use at CoatsforClunkers.com, which was set up just for the drive.

An’jel Salon in midtown is offering a manicure-and-martini combo for customers who donate coats for the drive, menswear shop Rothman’s is planning a discount program, Club H Fitness will waive its initiation fee and Paragon Sports is lending a hand with free gloves. Even the New York Mets are getting into the game: The team is hosting a coat collection site at Citifield and pitching in with a pair of free tickets to an April ballgame for anyone who donates a coat for New Yorkers in need.
