Critters in the City: It is a Jungle Out There

MAY 11, 2010

Find out where the wild things are without having to go on safari.

Do those crazy-cute nature shows have the kids—or you—in the mood for animal antics, but the nearest thing that resembles a wild beast is your neighbor’s chihuahua? The usual suspects and the occasional visitor aside, there are plenty of furry, crawling and flying fauna within the city’s boundaries to educate, entertain and re-acquaint us with nature without having to book a safari. More lions, tigers, bears—and Ark-loads of other species—roam the Central Park, Bronx, Queens and Staten Island zoos than anyone could name—much less visit—in a day. The Prospect Park Audubon Center is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to wildlife preservation and natural education.

For featured creatures of a more domesticated variety, local animal care and rescue centers like the ASPCA, Animal Care and Control of New York City (CACC), and smaller organizations like Bide-a-Wee and City Critters are usually more than happy to give you some petting time. If you’re in a livestock state of mind, you can find yourself down on the farm among the sheep and goats of the Queens Farm Museum. The Art Farm in the City will even set the (two-legged) little ones up with a part-time pet.

To learn more on your own, Urban Neighbors and the Department of Parks and Recreation are good places to find out about your non-human neighbors.
