Crystal Clear: Clean Windows Make a Big Difference

No matter how spotless your apartment is, it won't really sparkle if you're looking through dirty windows.

Whether you do the job yourself or enlist the services of a professional, clean glass can make your world a lot brighter. Local services that specialize in big window cleaning jobs include Frank's Window Cleaning—their pros can be seen scaling the city's tall buildings in feats of superhero-esque bravery—Crystal Apple and Apple Window Cleaning. Heavy-duty window-washing services like these are a must if you need to remove hard water spots, glass oxidation, stickers, paint or cement.

If you're feeling motivated to go the Do-It-Yourself route, it turns out that grandma's tried-and-true method of using crumpled up newspaper and vinegar may be the best way to get the streak-free job done after all. Other environmentally safe solutions can be found here (via re-nest). The New York Times rolled up their sleeves for a similar test of window cleaners and found that, in addition to the newsprint-and-vinegar method, the classics do the best job. Greenology (available at Whole Foods and major hardware chain stores) makes window—and other household—cleaning products that got high marks for vinegar-based cleaners that protect the environment while they let the sunshine in.
