Find Your Inner Designer

JANUARY 21, 2011

A DIY print lab and a pop-up gallery with a take-home twist let you create with some help from the pros.

Gowanus Print Lab recently offered a workshop/event inviting participants to design a pair of custom converse sneakers, then walk away in their handiwork. Are you an artist looking to print an edition of posters? A textile designer printing yards of fabric? A t-shirt designer looking for a place to crank out your upcoming collection? This “fully-loaded” screen printing workspace in a newly-chic Brooklyn neighborhood offers members the use of any necessary materials, including inks, emulsions, squeegees and screens. They also offer screen printing workshops and classes for all skill levels (including the aforementioned Converse class and one that shows you how to design your own wallpaper) and monthly studio rentals for those who prefer to have their own dedicated space.

ModulA.R.T. brings the work of talented graphic artists into your home, but you still get to add your own creative angle. The concept is modular: You select the shapes, materials and colors, then decide how they’ll go together. You can “collect” a group of already-composed works, get in-house advice or commission a custom-designed piece using ModulA.R.T. modules. Change your mind or your decor? You can add modules or re-arrange them at any time.
