Getting There: Traffic Tracking Tools

MARCH 31, 2009

There's no longer any excuse for not looking where you're going.

Getting from point A to point B may seem simple, but when you need to navigate New York City traffic, a growing arsenal of tools has sprung up at your fingertips (literally) to help navigate the mean streets.

Google mobile is the leader of the pack. Download the application to your mobile device and suss out traffic conditions on your route within seconds. You can pinpoint your location on a map—whether or not you have GPS capability—and find out exactly which streets are backed up and which are clear. You can even check up on where your friends.

The real-time cameras provided by the NYC DOT let you take a peek at conditions where you're headed. 511NY is New York State's official traffic and travel info source, providing real-time information on traffic flow, public transportation changes, and other trip-saving items.

Next on our wish list (suggested by Lee Semel, co-founder of Sawhorse Media): A mobile app called Is A Car Coming–for people who can't stop texting, even when crossing the street.
