Giving Something Back: Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts

JULY 30, 2009

The city's lawyers help artists and non-profits with tough legal issues without the steep legal fees.

In tough economic times it pays to know a good lawyer, even on a shoestring budget. One New York organization of legal professionals is working to lend a hand. Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA) offers a wide range of services including Q and A hotlines like Art Law Line and Ask the Lawyer service for clients, in-house appointments with staff attorneys and the pro bono services of over 1,200 volunteers tailored to the specific needs of low-income artists and non-profit arts organizations.

Not only are the lawyers who give their time through VLA accessible, but they're reportedly some of the best in the city. VLA also works to provide education about business issues that affect artistic and creative fields, including Legal and Business Bootcamp for arts and cultural organizations and seminars and workshops covering up-to-the-minute legal hotspots like media and copyright issues. If you're a legal professional who wants to get involved you can offer your pro bono services or financial support. If you're looking for low-cost or free legal aid you may also want to visit the NYC Pro Bono Center, another good resource for pairing legal professionals with those who need them.
