Governor's Island: Last Chance 'Til Next Year

OCTOBER 8, 2009

The 172-acres of Governor's Island is about 22 city-blocks long end to end, with 92 acres designated as the Governor's Island Historic District. Most of the Historic District is open to the public for picnics, tours, concerts, car-free biking, and more.

Top 5 reasons you should visit Governor's Island before it's closed for the season after October 11:

1. This weekend's Archeological Dig. Get a rare peek at the partially excavated remains of a 400-year old hamlet discovered earlier this year. The site is only open to the public through October 11.

2. Five miles of car-free biking. More than two miles of it consists of a waterfront promenade (great for jogging and walking, too). What's more, you can get there by bike. Also: Free bike Fridays!

3. Water Taxi Beach. Food, fun and entertainment for the whole family.

4. Colonel's Row, and 22 acres of historic landmark district. Visit historic buildings, bring a picnic and relax without having to plan a road trip.

5. It's only a seven-minute ferry ride from lower Manhattan.
