Happy Trails: Horseback Riding for Urban Riders

JANUARY 25, 2011

Horse lovers at all experience levels can find miles of scenic bridle paths, indoor riding, lessons, boarding services and more without leaving the city.

The city’s parks are a good choice for naturally beautiful riding trails, and nearby stables often offer lessons, guided rides and events. In the Bronx, Van Cortlandt Park is home to the 21-acre Riverdale Equestrian Centre with four outdoor riding rings, an Olympic-sized indoor arena, and easy access to the park’s miles of trails in addition to boarding facilities and riding lessons for kids and adults. Since Manhattan’s last stable closed in 2007, the Centre has been offering limited riding tours of Central Park as well. The Bronx Equestrian Center and the bridle path in Pelham Bay Park offer beautiful vistas of marshland and woods.

In Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, a 3.5 mile-long bridle path winds through scenic woodlands, meadows and a ravine. Nearby Kensington Stables offers a complete range of equestrian activities and services, including lessons, guided trail rides, and pony rides. Also in Brooklyn, Jamaica Bay Riding Academy is a full-service equestrian facility in the Gateway National Wildlife Preserve with 400 acres of manicured wooded trails and three miles of dedicated beachfront riding trails.

At Forest Park in Queens, visit Lynn’s Riding School in Forest Hills and saddle up for seven miles of bridle paths winding through 165 acres of oak forest. Staten Island offers a wide variety of riding terrain from beachside and wooded trails to parks and city streets. If you’d rather escape the city, Outdoor Bound will whisk you off on a winter horseback riding and wine-tasting day trip with pick-up and drop-off spots right in the middle of Manhattan.
