Hudson Valley Day Trips: Head North for Art

AUGUST 20, 2010

Head to the Hudson Valley for a healthy dose of uncommon art beyond city limits.

A day trip out of town doesn’t have to mean country living or a day at the beach. Storm King Art Center is a 500-acre sculpture park boasting an impressive collection of too-massive-for-Manhattan works by top modernists like Alexander Calder, Louise Nevelson and contemporary architect Maya Lin.

Dia:Beacon, run by the Dia Art Foundation, can be found in the orbit of any serious art geek. The foundation’s permanent collection—which includes works by celebrated artists like Andy Warhol, Richard Serra and Louise Bourgeois—resides here in a 300,000 square foot former Nilla Wafer factory. Getting there is easy: The museum is a short walk from the Metro North stop. While you’re in town, discover a treasure trove of arts and culture destinations and events beyond the museum’s walls.

The towns of Peekskill and Hudson—magnets for formerly-urban artists seeking space and affordability—both host busy arts scenes centered around gallery spaces, cafes, restaurants and pubs. You’ll find enough to keep you busy on and off Warren Street in Hudson, and the first Friday of every month is Gallery Night in Peekskill (only an hour from Grand Central).
