In the Night Kitchen: 24-Hour Service Keeps Manhattanites Well Fed

OCTOBER 27, 2009

The city may never sleep, but everyone's gotta eat.

Just as nightlife is part of the neighborhood's DNA, the East Village is known for its Polish diners, and time-worn tradition of post-clubbing red-eye breakfasts. Stalwarts like Veselka and Odessa fill both bills nicely, and the laid-back, welcoming atmosphere at 7A rounds out the Tompkins-park area 24-hour diner trifecta. For a more meaty alternative, Bereket has been serving authentic Middle Eastern staples for decades from the recently-expanded corner of Houston and Orchard streets. Stay downtown for a pre-dawn dessert fix: Sugar Sweet Sunshine bakery in the LES tempts with cupcakes and other treats at all hours and the Donut Pub on West 14th Street proves there's never a wrong time for a donut craving. Even further downtown, The Square Diner has served Tribecans 24-7 through so many of that neighborhood's transformations.

The Upper West Side has a bit of a reputation for classic 24-hour diners as well. City Diner, Big Nick's Burger and Pizza Joint (big burgers, big pies), Manhattan Diner and French Roast Uptown (more bistro than bare-bones) all vie for night owl fly-overs. The Upper East Side offers 3 Star (24 hour delivery is a plus for those in the far eastern reaches of the uptown neighborhood). Midtown keeps the door open on a dizzying array of choices around the clock: Korean barbecue (Kum Gang San), welcoming ambience and gourmet grub (Pigalle), and Jewish deli sandwiches (Sarge's) coexist with standard diner fare.
