Kid Spas: Pampering for Pint-Sized Patrons

AUGUST 24, 2010

Are spa treatments becoming part of the preteen routine?

Manicures, pedicures, facials and other spa treatments that keep us glowing have recently become an option for city kids as young as five. The trend has already gotten plenty of attention in Brooklyn, where it seems to have started. Dimples Kids Spa in Brooklyn Heights pampers junior patrons (from infants to 12-year-olds) with chocolate, cherry, and strawberry honey facials and other kid-friendly treats. Wonderland Kids Spa offers “ice cream and cake” manicures and “queen and princess (mommie and me)” services.

These new kiddie spas also offer party packages to give little misses a chance to share spa treatments with their pals. While most regular spas have an over-18-only policy, a few have begun to offer services for pint-sized patrons; Euphoria Spa in TriBeCa offers a “My First” series of treatments (facials, massages) for ages 5-12. There is some concern among more practical parents that prepubescent pampering may lead to distorted priorities and expectations, and that teenage plastic surgery and body image issues aren’t far behind. But spa-loving moms claim it’s just a sweet treat they can share with their daughters and a fun way to keep them busy while they shop in the neighborhood.
