Kids of All Ages Meet, Eat and Create at Moomah

JANUARY 28, 2011

A colorful Tribeca cafe keeps little fingers busy and hungry moms happy.

Moomah calls itself a “creative playscape”, and sometimes what’s being created looks a lot like a very interesting mess. But that’s ok with owner Tracey Stewart (wife of Daily Show comedian Jon Stewart and mom to two little ones of her own). She created Moomah to give parents, children and caregivers an inviting space that nurtures creative stimulation, not over-stimulation. The year-and-a-half-old Tribeca cafe has become a haven for hip parents who crave the cafe atmosphere (plus Counter Culture coffee, Balthazar pastries, a great selection of cafe comestibles—even an impressively-curated wine and beer selection) but need a place where their toddlers and kids aren’t in the way.

Every detail is attended to: The food is fresh, locally sourced, organic and tasty as well as kid-friendly (including finger-foods and a “supertryer sampler”). There’s a toddler potty seat behind the loo. On the more organized end, there’s a rotating roster of projects going on at the do-it-yourself kids’ crafts table; tots pay a fee and have at it, ending up with a new creation to bring home with them. There are do-it-together projects for kids and grownups to bond over. But that’s just kid stuff: The Funky Forest is, “a state-of-the-art wild and living ecosystem where children manage natural resources to influence their immersive, interactive environment,” a creative exhibition where kids can manipulate a video stream to “feed” the trees and make them grow. The rotating gallery atmosphere keeps eyes as busy as hands; Classes and birthday parties are an option, too.
