Let's Do Brunch: Uptown and Downtown Classics

OCTOBER 2, 2009

The more things change, the more they stay the same when it comes to Manhattan weekend brunch.

New Yorkers love brunch. The revered institution provides a great reason to converge on favorite standbys and reconnect with old friends and family. Crowds are a given, but the general consensus is that it's worth the wait for delicious international menus at well-loved favorites.

The uptown/downtown dichotomy provides a slightly different brunch experience. Uptown spots tend to draw crowds earlier, with more families. Downtown brunch brings out more dark glasses to hide bleary eyes from last night's revelry. Uptown favorites include Isabella's, Alsace, Telepan, Eli's Vinegar Factory (part of the Zabar's empire), Kitchenette, and Sarabeth's East and West. Among downtown weekend brunch classics are Essex (unlimited drinks are a thing of the past but the drink specials are still legendary), Clinton St. Baking Company, Prune (the menu and exotic Bloodies are a cut above most others), Café Orlin, Jane, Five Points and, of course, Balthazar. Remember: Get there early, or expect to get very hungry as you mingle with sidewalk crowds from at least three states.
