Living in Yorkville, a Low-key UES Neighborhood

MARCH 19, 2012

The Upper East Side neighborhood known as Yorkville is located to the east of Third Avenue between 79th and 96th Streets, with the East River as its eastern NYC apartments in Yorkvilleborder.  These easternmost blocks lose none of the rare opportunities the Upper East Side affords while being one of Manhattan’s more low-key residential enclaves. Home prices in Yorkville are slightly less steep than you'll find nearer Fifth and Madison Avenues, and though it’s currently a bit of a walk to the subway (good exercise!), the under-construction Second Avenue line will bring the subway right to the neighborhood.

Families love the neighborhood for its convenience, schools and many opportunities for outdoor fun. From rows of historic townhouses near Gracie Mansion and on Henderson Place to grand classic apartment buildings like 10 Gracie Square to modern highrise towers like the Cielo, Yorkville has managed to retain some of its friendly community feeling, even while surrounded by so much action.

Highlights: Carl Schurz Park–one of the city’s loveliest spots for dog-walking, sunbathing or just having a stroll by the river–and the East River waterfront esplanade; John Jay Park on East 77th right on the East River with its public swimming pool; the ferry terminal off East 90th street; great shopping along Third Avenue; and beautiful, elegant residential blocks.
