Modular Moment: Prefab Homes Are a Modern Solution

The modern prefab emerges as a great idea with a starchitect pedigree.

Modern prefab remains one of the most creative forms of architecture, combining comfortable, affordable, environmentally-conscious living space with cutting-edge design.

Several popular national architecture exhibitions like Home Delivery: Fabricating the Modern Dwelling at MoMA and Walker Art's Some Assembly Required have put prefab housing on the map in this decade. One reason for the interest among future-facing builders is the opportunity that prefab homes provide to re-think building materials from the ground up for their green appeal. Award-winning urban architects at firms like LOT-EK and Thom Mayne of Morphosis—who designed the new Cooper Union building—have modular creations among their works. LOT-EK has even proposed a design for the new Pier 57 using uber-modular shipping containers.

Even modern furniture sources like Design Within Reach and IKEA (though not in the US) have joined sources like Modern Modular in the prefab sales game.
