I.M. Pei-designed Terminal Six at JFK to be razed; The Whitney approves plans for a downtown branch.

The Port Authority has announced plans to demolish the I.M. Pei-designed Terminal Six building at JFK International Airport, though future plans for the site have not been specified. Preservationists and others have raised objections to the demolition, as it “represents an era of aviation,” and the architect himself is quoted as being “very unhappy” to hear news of the demolition.

The Whitney Museum has approved plans for a new museum facility on Gansevoort Street near the Hudson River, citing a need for more space to display its collection, manage visitors and accommodate education programs with room for auditoriums and classrooms. The new downtown museum will be designed by Renzo Piano, with ground-breaking planned for the new building next spring.
