Major traffic changes will speed travel on East Side Avenues; City Planners Green-light Domino Complex

First and Second Avenues—from Houston Street to 125th street in Manhattan—will be getting dedicated bus lanes, according to plans recently announced by Mayor Bloomberg’s office and MTA. The notoriously slow bus corridor is long overdue for the addition, which will remove buses from car lanes and add the ability for bus passengers to pay their fare at on-street machines before boarding. The commute along the 8.5 mile length of the avenues currently takes about 90 minutes–the time it takes to get from New York to Philadelphia by train.

The City Planning Commission has approved redevelopment plans for the former Domino Sugar complex—once the world’s largest sugar refinery—on the East River in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The current plans for the 11-acre site include public open space, apartments (660 of the planned 2,200 units will be offered at below-market rates), community facilities, office and retail space.
