New Developments in the News

JULY 5, 2010

The Parrish flees Southampton for more space in Water Mill; A sidewalk cafe will replace hot dog hawkers at the Guggenheim.

The much-loved Parrish Art Museum at 25 Jobs Lane in Southampton has announced plans to pull up stakes for bigger digs in nearby Water Mill, N.Y. The museum’s new space will reportedly be a $25 million barn designed by the internationally celebrated firm of Herzog & de Meuron. Parrish Museum director Terrie Sultan, while admitting fondness for its current home in the star-studded resort village, says the site “can’t function as a 21st-century museum.”

In other art museum news, the Guggenheim Museum is seeking permission to open a sidewalk cafe at the front of the iconic Frank Lloyd Wright spiral on Fifth Avenue. Plans for the outdoor kiosk include a handful of tables under the building’s overhang; the cafe will be run by the same company that oversees the museum’s current dining spots. According to a museum spokesman, the kiosk will replace current street vendors in an attempt to help “maintain the atmosphere of the museum.”
