New Developments in the News

AUGUST 2, 2010

New LES Girls Club building will offer 78 rentals and tons of opportunity; sale vote for West Side Tennis Club could mean important news for Queens.

A 12-story building at 101 Avenue D will offer 78 mixed-income rental apartments above the long-awaited 30,000-square-foot new home of the Lower Eastside Girls Club Center for Community. The club–which expects to open in early 2012–hopes the new facility will enable it to triple its current program capacity. The new center will feature a Technology Core/ IT Center, a Library & Academic Support Center for after-school tutoring, a Health and Wellness Center, art studios, a science and environmental education center and facilities for digital journalism. A landscaped courtyard will provide an oasis for outdoor dining and low-key events.

Members of the West Side Tennis Club (former home of the U.S. Open) in Forest Hills, Queens, are preparing for an August 19 vote on whether to sell the club’s stadium. Surrounded by one of the borough’s most prestigious residential districts, the club and 15,000-seat stadium are prime real estate, which has led to speculation that the site could be a candidate for high-end residential development. Two-thirds of the club’s voting members must agree to a sale before it can be considered.
