SHoP Architects reveal Atlantic Yards/Barclays Center design; Brooklyn gets another Superfund site

SHoP Architects has unveiled designs for the public plaza that will be part of the new Barclays Center (formerly known as Atlantic Yards) in downtown Brooklyn. Designed to be a gateway to the planned arena, the 38,885 square foot plaza is nearly two-thirds open space bounded by a plant-covered landscape designed to promote a “a living, wave-like ambiance” enhanced by curved benches and providing a backdrop for the Barclays Center Oculus.

Newtown Creek, an estuary on the border between Brooklyn and Queens, has been desginated a Superfund site by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Superfund is the federal program that investigates and cleans up the most complex, uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites in the country. The nationally significant waterway was once one of the city’s busiest industrial hubs. The Gowanus Canal, also in Brooklyn, was named a Superfund site in March.
