Mayor mulls plan for 7 to Secaucus; St. Ann’s Warehouse arts group scores DUMBO Tobacco Factory.

The Bloomberg administration is reportedly in the beginning stages of coming up with a plan to extend the No. 7 subway line from 34th Street and 11th Avenue to Secaucus, New Jersey. Soaring costs recently resulted in New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s nixing plans for a new commuter rail tunnel; the mayor’s office hopes that extending the 7 line to New Jersey will address growing transportation capacity issues at a fraction of the original tunnel’s cost.

DUMBO-based Arts and theater group St. Ann’s Warehouse has been given the green light to take over and renovate the vacant Tobacco Warehouse in Empire-Fulton Ferry Park, just north of the Brooklyn Bridge. The Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation chose the organization, which hosts musical performances by avant-garde musicians and cutting-edge theater events, to transform the currently-roofless 19th century building into a $15-million mixed-use performance hall, self-sustaining community center, and plaza. St. Ann’s execs say they have already raised a third of the funds needed for the renovation.
