Saarinen TWA Terminal at JFK may become boutique hotel lobby; Banks move out, media tenants move in to Wall Street environs;

The breathtaking landmark of modern architecture that is Eero Saarinen’s 1962 TWA terminal at JFK International Airport may get a new lease on life as a boutique hotel. The Port Authority has issued a request for qualifications, envisioning a small hotel in the space between the old terminal and the newly-constructed JetBlue building behind it; the interior of the Saarinen building would form the entryway and lobby—with restaurants and shops—for the hotel. The former terminal has been empty since the airline’s bankruptcy in 2001 and recently underwent $20 million worth of renovations.

The departure of tenants like Fidelity Investments, American International Group (AIG) and the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation from their Lower Manhattan offices has had city planners fearing for the district’s growth. But non-financial companies like Conde Nast—said to be currently negotiating a 1 million-square-foot lease at 1 World Trade Center—, Newsweek and a growing number of law firms, tech companies and nonprofit organizations are moving in, adding diversity and desirability to the area and leading to talk of the district’s future as a new “media alley.”
