Community board opposes pop-up cafe plans; Interfaith cultural center considered for controversial mosque site

Community Board 2 in the restaurant-packed residential area south of 14th Street, north of Canal Street and east of Bowery/Fourth Avenue has expressed opposition to 5 of 6 proposed temporary outdoor cafe seating areas in former parking spaces. The “popup” cafes—a popular option last year—were intended to give local restaurant owners a chance to expand outdoor seating in warm weather. Opponents of the sidewalk service objected to the noise, crowds, garbage and vermin they felt were the result of the al fresco eateries.

Daisy Khan, executive director of the American Society for Muslim Advancement, and her husband, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, have introduced the possibility of creating an interfaith cultural center at 51 Park Place in downtown Manhattan. The couple, who were involved in the proposed Muslim community center at that location two blocks from Ground Zero that was met with such conflict and controversy last year, said the new center would be interfaith in character and would include a center for inter-religious conflict resolution. An estimated $100 million in public and private funds need to be raised before any of the suggested alternatives would be realized.
