Court dismisses lawsuit against New Domino project; Whitney museum breaks ground on new downtown building

A swift decision by the New York State Supreme Court has dismissed a lawsuit that would have held up development of the former Domino Sugar Factory site in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The lawsuit challenged the city’s approval of the project on grounds that its developer failed to conduct proper environmental reviews. The $2 billion redevelopment project includes restoration of the main Domino Sugar building and creation of about four acres of public open space with a waterfront esplanade that would link to Grand Ferry Park on the 11-acre Domino Sugar refinery site along the Williamsburg waterfront.

The Whitney Museum of American Art has broken ground on its new building on Gansevoort Street between West Street and the High Line in the Meat Packing District. The new museum space, designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop and Cooper, Robertson & Partners, will be open in 2015 and will house the largest column-free gallery—18,000 square feet—in New York City as well as having dedicated space for classrooms, a multi-use indoor/outdoor space for film, video and the performing arts, a restaurant, a cafe, a bookstore and more.
