Tallest residential tower called a "model for the future"

More plans have been revealed for the "New York Tower"—as it is currently known–near Madison Square Park. The plans are somewhat controversial—as they remain unofficial at this point—though the project's designer has included them in his book, "Counterpoint," and they've been a source of discussion in local media.

Daniel Libeskind's renderings for 1 Madison Avenue—made at least a year ago, according to developers—reveal a glass-clad tower with curved sides, cut away into stepped balconies. Multi-story columns support the top of the tower, which could reach nearly 937 feet—54 floors above the 14-story office building at that address—making the tower the city's tallest residential structure.Libeskind, who won acclaim for his 1999 design of the Jewish Museum in Berlin and is the master planner for the redevelopment of the World Trade Center site at Ground Zero, intends the Madison Square tower to offer a "park-in-the-sky model for the future," according to an architecture blogger Matt Chaban, with bands of terraces running the length of the building. The project's developers are looking ahead towards a significantly improved economy before construction starts.

A new LEED Certified building is in planning stages at 157 West 57th street. The planned structure will be home to a 5-star Park Hyatt and luxury condominiums, in addition to retail space.
