New Developments in the News

JANUARY 25, 2010

A design contest inspires new ideas for sidewalk sheds, and a new project’s design inspires fear and loathing in NoHo.

A recent design competition sponsored by the Department of Buildings and a number of other city organizations addressed the challenge of improving the lighting beneath the city’s sidewalk construction “sheds.” The winning design, submitted by Young-Hwan Choi, a 28-year-old student at the University of Pennsylvania, is called “UrbanUmbrella,” and consists of thin, curved support struts on poles beneath fluorescent light tubes arrayed in a semi-circular pattern reminiscent of uplit Gothic cathedral naves.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission held a hearing recently on the design for a 13-story hotel on Great Jones Street in NoHo. The Smith-Miller + Hawkinson design for Louis Greco is notable not just for its sliver size and scrim facades, but also but for its 30-foot high wobbly picket fence.
