New Names, Classic Menus

JUNE 5, 2009

Jo's and Table 8 give downtown diners a few new options.

At a time when the actual opening of a new restaurant is good news, two new dining spots have officially arrived, one in the Cooper Square Hotel, the other on a chic boutique-filled block of Elizabeth Street. The just-opened Jo's (264 Elizabeth Street), occupies the former Tasting Room space, and does nothing to spoil the still-a-neighborhood vibe of its NoLiTa environs. Dark and cozy, with a familiar-feeling bar/bistro up front and an elegant, clubby back room, it might be a perfect dinner date destination or drink spot. The menu itself offers carefully done pub/comfort food (braised lamb pappardelle, grilled trout) with irresistible touches like oysters on the half shell, standout wines and classic cocktails.

North across Houston Street, the long-awaited Table 8 has finally opened in the Cooper Square Hotel (25 Cooper Square, between 5th and 6th Streets), that unmistakable anchor of what has become the Bowery boutique-hotel district. Restaurateur Govind Armstrong has added Table 8 to his mini-chain of boutique hotel dining rooms in L.A. and Miami, and on a warm night, the sounds of wine and conversation—accompanied by more comfort food—waft from the leafy garden and open doors of the leather-walled, candle-lit dining room.
