Notable NYC Neighbors

MARCH 27, 2013

Billy Joel was a Midtown guy; Bruce Willis is back on the Upper West Side; Ethan Hawke’s downtown house hits the market.

Billy Joel’s former Central Park South penthouse–it also belonged to Ted Turner at one time–just changed hands for $11.375 million. Though the most impressive selling point of the 10,000-square-foot co-op at 128 Central Park South might be its wraparound terraces with stunning park and city views, the apartment also features three fireplaces and a private elevator (CurbedNY).

Ethan Hawke’s casual decor (hello, denim sofa!) may not be the most covetable thing about the two-family townhouse the actor recently put on the market for $6.25 million, but the home’s location on West 21st Street in Chelsea, with neighbors like the Chelsea Enclave at 177 Ninth Avenue, is a sweet spot for many (CurbedNY).

The Greenwich Village co-op at 40 Fifth Avenue belonging to Where the Wild Things Are author and kids’ book illustrator Maurice Sendak is for sale for $3.15 million. The 2-bedroom pre-war apartment that the author used as a NYC pied-a-terre features a wood-burning fireplace, built-in cabinets and a landscaped common garden. Proceeds from the apartment’s sale will go to the Maurice Sendak Foundation, which provides grants to artists (WSJ).

Former and once-again Upper West Side resident Bruce Willis is the buyer of the Eldorado apartment at 300 Central Park West listed by U2 bass player and Bono buddy Adam Clayton for $8.695 million. The three-bedroom co-op in the classic pre-war building boasts a 38-foot entry gallery and a living room with Central Park views (CurbedNY).
