NYC Real Estate Roundup

Preserving New York’s communities: the Upper West Side, East Village and Greenwich Village.NYC real estate neighborhoods

Residents of the Upper West Side are attempting to change zoning laws to keep chain stores and banks from opening in their midst, which they see as a threat to the neighborhood’s character. New zoning regulations proposed by NYC's Department of City Planning would limit the size of stores on Columbus and Amsterdam avenues, which residents hope will discourage the chains, as they tend to favor large spaces. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission will hold an emergency public hearing on January 17th at 1:30 pm to vote on the proposed East 10th Street Historic District in the East Village. The vote is being rushed through to prevent developer Ben Shaoul from obtaining permits to build on top of one of the buildings in the proposed District. The Historic District would include 26 buildings on the north side of East 10th Street, extending along the northern edge of Tompkins Square Park between Avenues A and B (The Lo-Down).

Greenwich Village residents got to speak their minds about the planned NYU expansion in the area. Public hearings began recently on the university’s plans for an expanded campus that would involve the re-development of two blocks bordered by Mercer Street, West Third Street, LaGuardia Place and West Houston Street. Community advocacy and preservationist groups—and many Greenwich Village residents—strongly oppose the expansion plans (via NYNearsay).
