One Pickle Less in the LES: Guss' Moves to Brooklyn

JULY 31, 2009

The Lower East Side "Pickle District" will lose a bit of its crunch when Guss' Pickles moves across the pond.

Guss' has been in the neighborhood since former pushcart pickle purveyor Izzy Guss opened up shop in 1910, though the Guss family sold the business in 2002. Current owner Patricia Fairhurst's reasons for the move from the 87 Orchard Street address include impossible rents and a need for more space.

Kosher feast destination Second Avenue Deli abandoned (nearby East Village) ship several years ago for uptown pastures, leaving Katz's deli, knish king Yonah Schimmel, Kossar's Bialys and Russ & Daughters—along with Guss' and fellow pickle-peddler The Pickle Guys—behind to hold down what remains of the old neighborhood nosh network. Guss' is relocating to 39th St. between 14th and 15th Avenues in Borough Park.
