Pool Party Coming to Midtown

JULY 23, 2010

The mobile pools that made a big splash at Brooklyn backyard parties will be open to the public on Park Avenue next month.

Last summer’s “only in New York” buzz was about the cleverly-organized “dumpster pools” installed on a hidden Brooklyn lot near the Gowanus Canal. The ad-hoc oases, created by Macro-Sea (the company builds the pools as an experiment in recycling materials and urban renewal) and a handful of developers, were invite-only, and the ensuing private pool parties, midnight dips and art events made the pools a hot ticket.

This summer, ordinary Manhattan mortals will have a chance to frolic poolside and get their feet wet. The Bloomberg administration has asked Macro-Sea to install three similar mobile pools on the Park Avenue as part of the city’s Summer Streets initiative. The “dumpster pools” will be open on the first three Saturdays in August from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The pools will be cleared by the Department of Health, and a water filtration system will keep them clean.

Sadik-Khan–the city’s transportation commissioner–is a big fan of the idea: “[the mobile pools] will put even more ‘park’ into Park Avenue. It will almost be like a Park Avenue boardwalk.”(via NY Times)
