Pop Stars: New Life for a Classic Summer Treat

AUGUST 6, 2010

Perhaps it’s the childhood memories of Popsicles by the pool, but the refreshing charm of coolness-on-a-stick has worked its magic on the city this summer as shoppers and diners line up for a pop.

Brooklyn-based People’s Pops blends the kid-friendly concept with grown-up flavors and a love of all things from the garden. Flavors like Blackberry, Honey and Yogurt (Bon Appetit) and Rhubarb (NY Mag) come from local, sustainably-grown fruits and herbs. Discovered by the crowds that flow through Brooklyn Flea each weekend, they’ve become a summer cool-off staple. The shop’s icy wares (they serve shaved ice treats as well) are so in demand that they’ve popped up at the High Line park and Chelsea Market. Even better: They cater and deliver.

The popular street treat has found a more permanent home at Pop Bar (5 Carmine Street at 6th Avenue), where gelato, sorbetto and yogurt pops are made with high-quality natural ingredients and you can choose from a mouth-watering selection of “poppings” like dark or white chocolate, almonds and brownie chunks to top off your pop.
