Community gardens in many neighborhoods offer great ideas for creating secluded, private spaces and shady hideaways. Meetups are a great way to get to know your neighbors and get a peek over their garden fences. If you’re in the Hamptons, the Parrish Art Museum is offering Landscape Pleasures, a symposium on landscaping with tours of the neighborhood’s most beautiful gardens.

If you’re looking for ways to raise the charm factor of your own outdoor space, the Chelsea Garden Center stocks an impressive selection, IKEA is a reliable go-to for reasonably-priced outdoor furniture and accessories, and Ebay is a good option for vintage outdoor finds.
