Shopping Season: A Holiday Market Guide

NOVEMBER 26, 2010

If you want to look beyond the usual holiday merch this season, you’ll find a bounty of markets, sales and pop-up shops that offer one-of-a-kind gifts, just-right items and handmade goodies galore.

Union Square and Columbus Circle holiday markets are the biggies, and they’ve been keeping the elves overworked for more than 16 years. They’re open through December 24, and you’ll find things you never knew existed but somehow seem just right, from edibles to wearables to trimmings for the tree.

More classic markets: Holiday shops at Grand Central Terminal, Bryant Park, and Chelsea Market guarantee that you’re never far from a shopping opportunity. Hip newcomer Brooklyn Flea returns with its much-loved holiday outpost, Gifted. The WIRED store, occupying the massive former Tower Records downtown space, provides endless temptation of the shiny new gadget variety for as long as the season lasts (check for cool family events there, too).

If you’d rather stock up on more creative stuff, you’ll find acres of handmade arty goodies at the Artists and Fleas Brooklyn Holiday Bazaar, the Bust Holiday Craftacular, and Makers Market. This dispatch from Markets of New York lists even more ways to stay on top of your shopping list.
