Spacebook: Social networking for your building

JULY 24, 2008

Home on the 'net: social networking @ your building
Giving building residents a place to express themselves online can be a great way of breaking the ice and meeting the neighbors. A modern mix of that quaint institution known as the Welcome Wagon and currently-unavoidable social networking sites like Facebook and Myspace, apartment building-specific online social networking got started in New York City.

Matthew Goldstein, founder of Lifeat.com, saw an opportunity for residents of apartment buildings to connect with one another, share information about the building and swap ideas and tips on local restaurants and social events. Lifeat.com is currently in use in thousands of buildings in urban outposts throughout the U.S. In New York it's available at residences like 20 Pine, Orion, Blue, Jade, and Sutton 57, just to name a few. MeetTheNeighbors.org is another localized social networking site with a similar purpose.

These networks will seem familiar to today's web-savvy residents: Password-protected sites are created for the participating developments. Residents can post photos, profiles and other personal information. Dating, of course, is a popular use–what better way to meet that cute guy downstairs–but plain ol' neighborly stuff like free classifieds, local business recommendations and bulletin boards for addressing building issues like broken elevators or barking dogs are also popular. It's also a great way for local businesses to reach their customers. If you're not sure if there's an online network where you live, check out the above links for your building.
