Summer Movies Under the Stars

JULY 3, 2009

Summer in the city means that once again a full slate of great films from cult favorites to classics will be coming to a blanket near you.

The show starts at sundown in midtown's Bryant Park but the crowd arrives early to picnic on the lawn and grab a spot for the best of the classics from the '30s through the '70s. This summer's Central Park Film Festival runs from August 18-22 and will feature five films with the theme "Be Cool." Riverflicks for Kids screens family favorites and provides free popcorn along the Hudson during July and August.

Brooklyn Bridge Movies With a View 2009
takes "Stolen Summer" as its theme, with films that tell tales of heists, capers and thrills being screened in Brooklyn Bridge Park with a great view of the bridge— and the sky— above. Celebrate Brooklyn! celebrates the movie/music connection with their Music & Movies events on New York City's largest outdoor screen at the Prospect Park Bandshell.

Last— but by no means least— the Rooftop Films series shines as the edgy young sibling in the outdoor film family, with new docs, festival winners, quirky shorts and other cinematic creations popping up outdoors in locations all over the city, often accompanied by music and other fun sunset activities.
