Summer Sounds

JULY 2, 2010

Summer concerts fill the city with music.

Central Park Summerstage shows and Rumsey Playfield concerts may be the definitive laid-back summer events, featuring top international favorites like Sheryl Crow and Rihanna. New addition: gourmet food stands via Brooklyn Flea. Prospect Park Bandshell hosts Celebrate Brooklyn! featuring top acts like Sonic Youth and Sharon Jones and up-and-comers like Passion Pit and The National.

The South Street Seaport continues to rock amid the after-work revelry at Pier 17 with the latest in indie rock once again on the calendar. The annual River to River festival brings a packed slate of brilliantly-curated music and arts events to Lower Manhattan as well. Music on the Oval is a newer addition to the midsummer mix. The green lawn-and-fountain expanse tucked away in the center of family-friendly Stuyvesant Town hosts free shows with a top-quality lineup (via Brooklyn Vegan).

The famous Pool Parties have moved from their original, actual pool to East River State Park on the Williamsburg waterfront, and, thanks to support by NY Senator Chuck Schumer and a host of other local politicos, will stay put this year. For lovers of jazz and world music, Lincoln Center Out of Doors hosts a terrific summer series at Damrosch Park Bandshell. And for dance-party beat freaks, the P.S. 1 Warm-Up series is back–this summer’s line-up has just been announced and it’s hotter/cooler than ever.
