Terminal Coolness: An Airline's New Hub Has the Jet Set Covered

DECEMBER 19, 2008

Terminal 5 is the latest hotspot at JFK

Terminal 5, the new Jet Blue launch pad at New York's John F. Kennedy airport has finally taken flight after years of buzz and anticipation. The new hub was named after the iconic Eero Saarinen-designed TWA terminal at JFK. The original modernist building was completed in 1962 and closed in 2001, but the name–and plenty of sleek, white curves–lives on.

T5, as it is jauntily known by those who fly to and from its gates, offers super-efficient security lines, automated check-ins and other services, and piles of hip, tech-savvy amenities. A standout on the retail front is Muji-to-Go, a closet-sized outpost of the Japanese minimalist housewares chain. Several future-chic lounges beckon thirsty travelers to perch on the sculpture-as-furniture and sip pricy drinks that might be found at any new downtown nightspot.

A new "revive" service located near all gates provides touch screens for ordering meals you can have delivered right to your seat as you wait to board your flight. A "digital signage ring" wraps 360 degrees with 40-inch LCD screens to make sure you're never far from what's happening outside the neon-blue-and-cool-white cocoon. Seating is comfortable and plentiful throughout the new terminal, and wifi is everywhere, instantaneous, and free. Oh, and you're in an airport, in case you should ever want to leave.
