The End of a Decade: A Better, Safer City

DECEMBER 29, 2009

New Yorkers are living well, feeling safe for 2010.

It’s the end of a decade—we get the urge to look back at where we’ve been and take stock. What kind of city have we become, and what can we expect as we get a fresh start on the next ten years? For one, we live in a much safer city. The Big Apple’s most rotten days—held up for the rest of the world to fear in movies like “The Warriors“—are long gone. The tumble in crime began in the first half of the decade and has remained lower ever since. In fact, according to a NY Daily News report, our crime rate in the first quarter of 2009 had fallen 13.5% from the same time period in 2008—the lowest it’s been in more than 40 years. All major crimes had been reduced, with the biggest reductions seen in murders and motor vehicle theft.

Low crime is a big factor in living well, but Thrillist recently shared a broader set of statistics that add up to a “living well map” of the US—and New York fares especially well. Other factors: Education, high salaries, cultural amenities, and an environment conducive to business success.
