The Well-Appointed Kitchen

SEPTEMBER 9, 2008

Covetable kitchens go a long way in selling new apartments
When developers and their design partners set out to maximize the desirability of new and newly-renovated apartments for sophisticated buyers, kitchens are often a top priority. Up-to-the-minute appliances, materials and finishes can be the wow-factor that makes the difference between otherwise equal properties.

Technology: Premium appliances put the “dream” in dream kitchens. Currently sizzling: Modular refrigeration, induction cooktops that transfer heat to cookware electromagnetically, and speed-cooking ovens. Appliances from Viking, Sub-Zero, Miele and Bosch lead the pack, though for some individualistic buyers, European design from Bulthaup or Schiffini, done in standout colors, are in favor.

Style and color: Clean, contemporary lines are considered the most future-proof. Bolder use of color is definitely a new trend, but whites and naturals for countertops, cabinetry and tiles guarantee resellability.

Cabinetry and finishes: Cherry, maple and, to a lesser extent, exotic woods are in demand for cabinets; stainless steel is number one for appliances. For countertops and backsplashes, granite, followed by durable quartzite are top choices, with tile, granite and glass popular for backsplashes.

Layout: To accommodate more than one cook in the kitchen, multiple workstations—in some cases, separate prep sinks—are becoming popular as the kitchen becomes the social hub in many homes.

High-end showrooms (like Boffi Soho) are good places to get an idea of what the newest trends are—the ones that will start showing up in IKEA and Home Depot years down the road.
