Toro Stories: Special Events for the Sushi-Obsessed

AUGUST 18, 2009

If you’re beyond serious about sushi, the city rolls out a bounty of events, classes and more opportunities to sample your favorite fish.

New York is home to legions of sushi lovers waiting patiently in line outside their favorite jewel-box-sized sushi bar and overextending their spending on the omakase. Every one of them can tell you their favorite restaurant or chef, and the debate over the city’s top 10 sushi spots may never end.

Satsko restaurant offers do-it-yourself sushi for the roll-your-own enthusiast. Singles can chat over chirashi and bond over the uni question (love it or hate it?) at one of many Meet Market Adventures singles sushi-making lessons/dinners. And if that works out (and even if it doesn’t) you can sign up for a romantic Sushi & Sake Sunset Schooner Sail with Chef Morimoto. If you strive for higher education, the Institute of Culinary Education offers sushi classes for beginners, couples and families (bring the kids if they’re over 10). If you’d rather let your taste buds do the learning, sign up for a tasting event. You can find out about these events and more right from your desktop if you cast your line with the group of fellow fish-foodies on the New York Sushi Society’s online newsgroup, but you might want to keep a few of these sushi throw pillows handy for a visual reminder of your favorite snack til it’s time for your next fix.
