Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty at the Met
Last chance/closing soon: Organized by the Costume Institute, this exhibition celebrating the late Alexander McQueen’s extraordinary contributions to fashion packs a rare cultural wallop. Mr. McQueen challenged and expanded the understanding of fashion beyond utility to a conceptual expression of culture, politics, and identity. On August 6 and 7 the Met will stay open until midnight to accommodate last-minute visitors.

Summer Streets 2011
Part of the city’s greening initiative, Summer Streets takes over busy city streets and opens them up for people to play, walk, bike, and breathe in the name of providing more space for healthy recreation and encouraging more sustainable forms of transportation. Activities include yoga, running, rock climbing, sandboxes, a travel photo contest, a family picnic area and more.
August 6, 13 & 20, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Manhattan Magazine’s To Live and Dine in NYC
This foodie-fest, featuring chefs from such distinguished dining establishments as ABC Kitchen, Aquavit and Aldea, is also a fund-raiser with ticket sales ($35) to benefit Food Bank for New York City.

Brain: The Inside Story at the American Museum of Natural History
Last chance/closing soon: Brain: The Inside Story offers visitors insight into their own brains through imaginative art, vivid brain-scan imaging, and dynamic interactive exhibits for all ages as well as the latest in neuroscience and new technologies that are being used to study the brain and treat conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

The BMW Guggenheim Lab: Screenings, Collecting City Sounds
The BMW Guggenheim Lab will be in New York from August 3 to October 16. This week’s highlights offer rare glimpses into the city’s creative culture through screenings of Wild Combination (a documentary about downtown music visionary Arthur Russell), Last Address (Keith Haring and Robert Mapplethorpe), and Blank City, about the “blank generation” of artists and filmmakers. For a more interactive experience, join Walking Waves: Collecting Sounds and Remixes of the City to learn how to record and remix city sounds. All events take place at the Lab, located in First Park near the corner of Houston Street and Second Avenue.

Live Music Round-Up
NOLA treasures the Preservation Hall Jazz Band will provide an incomparable background for the Trey MacIntyre Project’s contemporary ballet at Lincoln Center Out of Doors; Big Audio Dynamite and members of Bad Brains and The Smiths sneer back at the’80s at Brooklyn Bowl (ticket giveaway here); Cold Cave keep things dark and chill; Mostly Mozart Festival highlight A Little Night Music comes to the Stanley H. Kaplan penthouse for a late-evening hour of classical music, champagne and a swoon-worthy view.
