What's Going on this Week

MARCH 2, 2011

Art meets the public for this annual spring coming-out party anchored by the Armory Show and surrounded by a galaxy of events befitting the world’s most important art city.

2011 Armory Arts Week brings everyone with an interest in art out of winter hibernation for the main event (March 3-6; full event info here), a collection of the world’s top modern and contemporary galleries and artists. The Armory Show anchors the week with hundreds of galleries and over 60,000 visitors. As in previous years, the show will consist of two parts: The Armory Show—Modern, on Pier 92, with a focus on international dealers specializing in historically significant modern art, while The Armory Show— Contemporary, at Pier 94, focuses on galleries that feature cutting edge art.

Satellite fairs include the The Art Show (dealer-focused exhibitions), Pulse, Volta, Fountain Art Fair (more avant garde), Red Dot (a highlight is this year’s Korean Art Show), Independent, SCOPE NY and Verge: Art Brooklyn. Volta NY, for example, is organized around solo artist presentations. This year’s highlights include work from installation artist Joyce Hinterding, sculptor Darren Foote, and ADA Gallery’s collection of 3-D photographic works from filmmaker George Kuchar. Events like Artprojx will be hosting screenings at the SVA Theatre to introduce new film and video work. Check the main schedule for a list of public events. ARTCARDS is a good resource for finding out what’s going on in galleries all over town.

The party circuit kicks off with the MoMA Armory Party and goes all week with round-the-clock festivities like Artists Wanted Night Event and the Red Dot opening reception and cocktail party.
