Working Out Of the Box: Unique Workouts

FEBRUARY 3, 2009

Feel like you're just spinning your wheels in your current fitness routine? Fortunately, the city's full of new moves.

The big cheese of quirky workouts is undoubtedly Crunch Fitness. The international gym chain has made a name for itself by coming up with a seemingly endless bag of new tricks for fitness classes. From the high-octane Surfboarding, Dodgeball, and Gridiron to the fancy footwork of B-Boyz and B-Girlz, Dirty Dancing, and the infamous Pole Dancing, to "chill outs" like Anti-Gravity Yoga Wings, Hippie Yoga,—this is for real—Naptime and much more, adventurous gym rats need never feel maze-bound.

If you'd rather fly through the air with the greatest of ease, "First timers are our specialty," at the New York Trapeze School, where anyone can try their hand or perfect their skill. Live your Cali beach bum dreams without having to leave the Isle of Manhattan with Sand Volleyball at Chelsea Piers. Cut down on laundry with Naked Yoga. It's about "accepting the totality of the form of the body and immersing into the ecstasy and absolute potential of the body soul union." Bring your own mat. And perhaps one day our sweat equity will go towards giving back the energy we burn: River Gym is only a concept, but it's certainly worth its weight in good intentions.
