X Marks the Spot: A New Organization Invites You to Think About Art

MARCH 6, 2009

The art-world voices behind the X initiative address the present and future of art.

A new not-for-profit art initiative is opening its doors in Chelsea (at the site of the former Dia Center for the Arts) on March 7th. Called simply X, it's an effort by the global art community to get people thinking—and talking—about new possibilities for creating and experiencing art. Artists, curators, museum professionals, gallerists, collectors, art historians and critics have joined forces here to respond to current economic and philosophical shifts and their cultural impact.

The initiative will be organized into four seasons over the coming year—spring 2009 through winter of 2010. Each season's program will consist of site-specific projects, exhibitions, performances, lectures, film screenings and weekly events. A few artists will also have work on display throughout the duration. Phase one of X will include exhibitions by three artists of different generations: Mika Tajima, Derek Jarman, and Christian Holstad. X will be free and open to the public during the hours of 11am-6pm, Wednesday through Saturday.

Location: 548 West 22nd Street
Opening party: March 7th, 2009, 7-9 pm.
