425 West End Avenue CLOSE
This building is such a victim, but its very strong massing that features a large rounded comer, mitigates considerably the loss of the cornice, whose plain, light-colored, flat replacement is only slightly better than that on 515 West End Avenue. Both cornices should be replaced to significantly improve not only their own property values but also those of the neighborhood.
Apart from the missing cornice, this is an impressive building. The 7-story, 30-unit building was erected in 1878 and converted to a cooperative in 1980.
It has a handsome, colonnaded, canopied, step-up entrance flanked by a large, tall, wrought-iron, spiked fence.
The building, which has consistent fenestration, has exposed fire escapes on its facades.
This neighborhood has excellent shopping as well as many interesting restaurants and a local subway station is nearby at 79th Street and Broadway. Riverside Park is one block away.
