Howard House - 246 West End Avenue: CARTER'S REVIEW

This elegant, 13-story apartment building at 246 West End Avenue at 71st Street was designed in 1913 by J. E. R. Carpenter for S. Fullerton Weaver.

Carpenter is widely considered one of the greatest architects of pre-war luxury apartment buildings in the city. His only other building on the Upper West Side is 173-175 Riverside Drive. On the Upper East Side, he was noted for 920 Fifth Avenue, 550 Park Avenue, 950 Park Avenue, 960 Park Avenue, which he did for Mr. Weaver, and 1172 Park Avenue.

This Renaissance palazzo-style, beige brick building, which is known as Howard House, has 100 apartments, fireplaces, a resident superintendent, storage space, high ceilings, and a full-time doorman.

It has a large, impressive entrance marquee, large light sconces, sidewalk landscaping, two bandcourses and a cornice. It also has decorative balconies on the 2nd, 5th and 9th floors and a three-story rusticated base.

It was converted to a co-op in 1992.
