96 Perry Street CLOSE
Perry Street is one of the more attractive streets in Greenwich Village with many handsome townhouses and brownstones and some attractive restaurants and boutiques. Like many parts of the Greenwich Village Historic District, however, it is not entirely made up of architectural wonders worthy of individual landmark designation. This building, for example, has fire escapes on its front and its just to the east of a garage.
Despite the fire escapes and the garage, however, the building manages to be rather dignified because it has a one-and-a-half-story rusticated limestone base, a canopied, one-step-up entrance and sidewalk landscaping. Furthermore, Perry Street’s ambiance in either direction is very charming and its location in the heart of the West Village is very appealing.
The building, which has a step-up vestibule and no doorman, was erected in 1900 and converted to a cooperative in 1983. It has 35 apartments.
The building’s location is quiet and only a few blocks from three subway stations and two crosstown bus lines.
