Nfourth CLOSE
This starkly good-looking, four-story corner building in the Williamsburgh section of Brooklyn is remarkably bold for its size and reinvents a cleancut, modern industrial aesthetic for residential use.
Designed by Karl Fischer, it has a rhythmic sense of syncopation that belies its eclectic and sophisticated massing.
Located at 161 North 4th Street at 620-624 Driggs Avenue, it combines largely glass facades with black, ribbed aluminum framing over a one-story, red-brick base. Many of its large, mutlipaned windows have small corners but the corner element of the building is angled as is a large bay window center section on the longer facade.
The scale of the building, which is known as Nfourth, is quite deceptive as it has 37 apartments.
It was developed by North 4th Development LLC of which Abe Caller is a principal.
The building, which has a bamboo garden with a waterfall, has interiors by Andres Escobar and there spiral staircases in some duplex units. The building has a garage and a fitness center.
It is three blocks away from the Bedford Avenue L subway station.
Not too far away is a building with a rather similar aesthetic designed by RKT&B Architecture and Urban Design. It is a four-story building at 170 North 5th Street that one websurfing commenter suggested "looks like a wood paneled station wagon."
